Running a SMART Recovery Meeting

Congratulations on completing the SMART Recovery Facilitator Training.
You are now ready to start facilitating SMART Recovery meetings and supporting participants in their recovery journey.
This page outlines the steps required to set up and launch your SMART Recovery meeting, whether you plan to run it online or in person.
Our team will support you through the process.

1. Register your SMART Meeting

Check requirements

Before registering your SMART Recovery meeting, ensure:
  • Your organisation holds an active SMART Recovery Australia membership
  • You have completed the SMART Recovery Facilitator Training
  • The meeting has been approved by your organisation (if applicable)
  • You have confirmed the day and time of the meeting
  • You have decided if the meeting will be online or in person


For Volunteers

  • Volunteers do not require an organisation membership.
  • You will be supported through the setup process – see the Volunteer page for more details


Once these are confirmed, you can proceed with registering your meeting.

Launch Your SMART Meeting

Once membership is confirmed, the next step is to register your SMART Recovery meeting.

During registration you will be asked to provide:
• meeting format (online or in-person)
• meeting day, time and location 
• facilitator details

This information allows us to add your meeting to the SMART Recovery national meeting directory, making it visible to participants looking for support.

What happens after you register your meeting?

1 - The SMART Recovery Operations team reviews your request
2 - A Zoom account is prepared for online meetings (if required)
3 - Your Meeting is scheduled in our system
4 - Your meeting is published on the SMART recovery website

You will receive confirmation once your meeting is live.
If we require any additional information, a member of the team will contact you.

2. Set up your SMART Meeting

 Zoom setup (for online meetings)

If your meeting is online, SMART Recovery Australia will provide a Zoom account free of charge.
You will receive an email from Zoom asking you to activate your account.

To activate your Zoom account:
- Open the Zoom activation email
- Confirm your email address and Full name
- Set your password
If you cannot find the email, please check your spam or junk folder.

Once your Zoom account has been activated, our team will finalise the meeting setup.

Your meeting goes live

Once the setup is complete, your meeting will be published on the SMART Recovery website so participants can find and register for it.

Your meeting page will include:
• meeting day and time
• meeting format (online or in-person)
• facilitator details & note section
• participant registration link (if online meeting)

If you ever need to update your meeting details (day, time, location or format), you can submit a change request directly from your meeting page.

3. Start your SMART Meeting

When it is time to run your meeting:

For online meetings
• Log in to your Zoom account
• Go to Meetings → Upcoming Meetings
• Click Start next to your meeting

At the beginning of each meeting, please remember to share the Pathcheck code in the Zoom chat.
Participants use this code to access their attendance certificate.
The Pathcheck code can be found on your meeting page, just below the Pathcheck logo.

SMART Recovery Meeting Framework

The SMART Recovery Meeting Framework provides guidance to ensure meetings are:
• Consistent and aligned with the SMART Recovery approach
• Safe and supportive for participants
• Flexible to meet local community needs
• Delivered using a clear and structured approach

The framework uses a simple Red, Amber and Green system to guide what must remain consistent and where flexibility is allowed.

Frequently asked questions

Can I change my meeting details later?

Yes. If you need to update your meeting day, time, location or format, you can submit a request directly from your meeting page using the “manage your meeting” link

Do I need to organise my own Zoom account?

No. If your meeting is online, SMART Recovery Australia will provide a Zoom account for you free of charge and assist with the setup.

How do participants receive attendance certificates?

Participants receive attendance certificates through Pathcheck.
At the beginning of each meeting, please share the Pathcheck code in the Zoom chat. Participants use this code to generate their certificate.
